For this collection of works, I invited people in my community to pose for me as a way to learn about art, painting, and other cultures. It is an on-going study in free-style painting within the frame of portraiture as well as a collaboration since the subject is present. These are one-to-three session paintings, where I work exhilarated by the energy of my sitter, usually people who are around me: artists, ny-style fast-yet-forever acquaintances and friends. My approach to painting here is time-sensitive and emotional. Also, I look to get closer to paint via color and velocity in my brushstroke and by working wet on wet during the sittings. In this series I began to think about the meaning of a pre and post-internet palette. A luminous and fluorescent acrylic underpainting feels as direct, as my working as close from perception as possible. I am interacting with material so that I can get the person I am looking at to appear in the paint, or the painting to resemble the physical features of the person. As soon as they appear on the painting I'd stop. Paintings are like a rehearsal where mistakes are encouraged, or like temper-tantrums where a simple, yet strident color combination is welcome. It is a space for newness; a flavorful tension of aim and chance and paint.
